Newborn Safety

When you bring a newborn baby home, keeping them safe is one of your biggest concerns. They seem so small and fragile, and if you’re a first-time parent knowing what to do can be particularly daunting.

Luckily, we have plenty of newborn safety essentials to keep your little one healthy and safe – and help you keep your own peace of mind. Those first few days are some of the most magical, and we’re here to make sure you can enjoy every minute of them.

What do I need to keep my newborn safe?

From the moment they wake up, to dinnertime, bathtime and bedtime, your little one is completely dependent on you to keep them safe and sound. You’ll quickly get settled into a routine with your new baby, and making health and safety an established part of it from day one will set some good habits going forward.

A baby monitor is going to become your best friend. The BT 400 Audio Baby Monitor is a wireless device which lets you listen to your baby through the night to make sure they’re having a peaceful night’s rest. For extra peace of mind, you could get a Summer Infant Sure Sight Video Monitor to keep an eye on your little one too.

What’s best for bathtime?

Make sure bathtime is a fun and enjoyable time for you and your baby by having the right equipment prepared. Check the temperature of a poured bath with the AVENT Digital Bath & Room Thermometer – this handy device can check room temperature too, so you can make sure there’s not too much of a difference between bath and room temperature. See our guide to bathtime with your newborn, for even more safety tips.

Newborn skin requires gentle skincare. Try the Earth Friendly Baby Calming Lavender Shampoo & Bodywash which is made from 99% organic and natural ingredients. Remember to take care of your little one’s teeth too, with the help of the Summer Infant 3-Piece Oral Care Set.

And what about bedtime?

As well as a reliable monitor, there are a couple of other night-time safety essentials for your newborn. Use a room thermometer to check the temperature of the bedroom before you dress your newborn for bed – you don’t want them to be under or overdressed, make sure they’re just right.

Instead of a pillow or duvet, put your newborn to sleep in a sleepsuit with built in mittens to stop them scratching their face while they snooze. We love this adorable Cath Kidston Mini Monsters Baby Sleepsuit. For more tips on bedtimes, read our blog post on a safe bedtime routine with your newborn.

What should I do if my baby gets ill?

As a new parent, it’s hard to know what’s normal or when you should be taking action. The Vicks Forehead Thermometer Fever Insight can give you a quick, non-invasive reading of your child’s temperature. If in any doubt about the health of your child, you should get in touch with your GP, or in an emergency, take them to A&E.

With the right accessories and preparation, you can make sure you bring your newborn home to a safe environment and enjoy those magical first days together.
