A young child in a car without a car seat is a vulnerable thing. Something as parents we would all agree. No one would dream of not putting a child in a car seat. In fact parents are spending increasingly on this vital piece of equipment for their child.

But what about in the cot where the child spends much of its time? The cot looks good and is functional, just like the car. The mattress, well, this is where things start to differ.

Sleep is vital for me, you, the parents, and especially the child. Those first few years see rapid development of the body and the brain. It is tiring stuff and can be affected by poor sleep. Good spinal support is also needed during the first few years; such are the demands of growth.

The child is vulnerable at this early stage and we have begun to realise that it is the things that we cannot see that are so much more harmful for the child. Even more reason to purchase a quality mattress. Key features to look out for are:

  • One which has a removable washable cover.
  • One which is water repellent which prevents contamination of the mattress core.
  • One that stays in shape for years to give good postural support over the lifetime of the mattress.

Your child will spend up to 50% of it’s early life in the cot. Not all mattresses are comfortable and not all mattresses protect. But a good mattress is like a good car seat; it does both.

To celebrate Safer Sleeping Week we have partnered with Kit for Kits to help raise awareness of the science of safe sleeping.
